At the age of 22, Ben Demery has already competed at the Australian Cycling Championships, the World Championships and most recently the Paralympics held in Beijing where he won two silver medals. As a vision impaired athlete, Ben competes on a tandem bike with his sighted team mate Shaun Hopkins who sits at the front and navigates the pair around the velodrome. Amazingly, the Novacastrian has only been cycling since July 2005. His interest in the sport was sparked when Vision Australia invited him to attend a Paralympics Committee talent day at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney. Ben had learnt to ride a bike as a child, but due to a few nasty spills, didn’t enjoy it. Yet riding with Olympians on the talent day was a great inspiration and he’s been in the saddle ever since. Within a year Ben had represented Australia at the IPC World Championships in Switzerland and was named Lake Macquarie’s Sports Person of the Year. In the future Ben would like to become an advocate for people with vision impairments. |
